Message #23848
[Bug 1195483] Re: Installation, Live and Check disc do not start on Asus ZenBook Prime UX31A
I can confirm that ubuntu saucy (13.10) won't boot on my Asus Zenbook
Prime with the stock kernel but if I install the kernel from comment #72
then everything works.
Do I understand correctly that now I mustn't allow ubuntu to install
kernel updates because those would overwrite the manually installed
packages from comment #72? If that is the case than this bug is a
security issue because it forces people to use a kernel version that
will eventually get outdated. Is there any plan to include the
modifications that lead to the packages in comment #72 into the saucy
kernel packages? Since ubuntu used to work on raring there are now a
number of users who won't be able to upgrade and will essentially be
left with an unsupported system when the support for raring stops in
January.
As a reference for other Zenbook Prime owners: As far as I understand
the only way to install saucy on the Zenbook Prime right now is as
follows:
1. Upgrade the BIOS and turn off secure boot as described here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AsusZenbookPrime#BIOS_Update
2. Install Ubuntu raring (13.04) from a bootable usb drive and reboot.
3. Update to saucy (13.10) but DO NOT REBOOT yet
4. After completing the update, download and install the two kernel packages from comment #72
5. Now reboot

Installation, Live and Check disc do not start on Asus ZenBook Prime

Bug description:
When I try to install Ubuntu 13.04 on a new Asus ZenBook Prime UX31A
from june 2013, grub will come up bit every option such as
Installation, Live and Check disc result in a blank screen. This is
possibly due to preinstalled Windows 8 and UEFI.
I did not approve/accept the Windows 8 installation and that should
not matter. I want to install only Ubuntu and *no* dual boot with the
preinstalled Windows 8. I want to erase the entire disc in firsts
steps of installation procedure.

Debugging attempts from
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Boot_Debugging failed. Perhaps I
did something wrong. What are ways to write debug to the screen in my
case?
And, more importantly, how do I get it working because have the right
to install whatever I want?
Is the only way to get it installed to accept the Windows 8 license
and install Ubuntu from Windows (and in effect making it dual boot
which I don't want).
Ubuntu should fix this as it is the flagship of a major laptop manufacturer (ASUS) for which Ubuntu is no longer installable.
