Upgrade to 13.10 dies silently

Bug description:
Get region error when I boot up. This started when I moved to 13.04
from 12.04 lts. System now seems to die when I try to move to
Saucys... 13.10
1) cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
2) sudo lspci -vnvn > lspci-vnvn.log
nothing returned for either command
currently using ubuntu 13.04.
Upgrade to 13.10 dies silently ( no messages pop up )
