[Bug 1249979] Re: r8169 Ethernet driver doesn't work

Hi,

I just tried with 3.12.0-031200-generic and although I don't get the
dmesg errors, it doesn't detect the Ethernet cable or does DHCP client
work. So, the evidence suggests this isn't entirely fixed upstream yet.

uname -a: Linux flibble 3.12.0-031200-generic #201311071835 SMP Thu Nov
7 23:36:07 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Here are the relevant bits of dmesg from the 3.12 kernel:

[ 0.760049] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
[ 0.760074] pci 0000:00:06.0: setting latency timer to 64
[ 0.760321] ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [APC3] enabled at IRQ 18
[ 0.760357] r8169 0000:01:0a.0 (unregistered net_device): not PCI Express
[ 0.760645] r8169 0000:01:0a.0 eth0: RTL8169sb/8110sb at 0xffffc90000c72000, 00:21:27:c9:5f:cf, XID 10000000 IRQ 18
[ 0.760648] r8169 0000:01:0a.0 eth0: jumbo features [frames: 7152 bytes, tx checksumming: ok]
[ 11.032543] r8169 0000:01:0a.0 eth0: link down
[ 11.032586] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

The link doesn't go up with the cable plugged in and I can confirm the
connection is just fine because it works on the motherboard slot (eth1)
still. There are no 'rtl_phyar_cond == 0' warnings any more though.

Title:
  r8169 Ethernet driver doesn't work

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Following an upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10, gigabit card stopped working
(100Mbps ethernet working fine on the motherboard still - KN9 Ultra).

  dmesg gives a load of warnings "r8169 0000:01:0a.0 eth0:
  rtl_phyar_cond == 0 (loop: 20, delay: 25)." and when rmmodding r8169
  and modprobing it, I get:

  [ 125.198865] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
  [ 125.199151] r8169 0000:01:0a.0 (unregistered net_device): not PCI Express
  [ 125.199669] r8169 0000:01:0a.0 eth0: RTL8169sb/8110sb at 0xffffc90000c5a000, 00:21:27:c9:5f:cf, XID 10000000 IRQ 18
  [ 125.199677] r8169 0000:01:0a.0 eth0: jumbo features [frames: 7152 bytes, tx checksumming: ok]
  [ 125.231623] r8169 0000:01:0a.0 eth0: link down
  [ 125.233790] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
  [ 125.240366] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

Plugging out and then in the cable makes no difference.
