[Bug 1195822] Re: MacBook Air 6, 2 (mid2013) Touchpad is Non-Functional
Brad Ford, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, as per http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-trusty.git;a=commit;h=148c1c8ad3c4170186ebe6ea5900adde27d2a0e7
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-trusty.git;a=commit;h=9d9a04ee758b4c1fcc7586d065cdde7a7607e156
I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Trusty Tahr, as well as Saucy:

Title:
MacBook Air 6,2 (mid2013) Touchpad is Non-Functional
Status in The Linux Kernel:
Unknown
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Bug description:
The MacBook Air 6,2 models (11 and 13 inch) touchpad is basically
broken; it does not function as a multitouch device, rather it
provides the functionality of a basic single-click mouse. All
multitouch capabilities are broken (right-click, scroll, gestures,
etc.).
I would expect that the touchpad would function as a normal fully-
functional touchpad, instead the touchpad functionality is limited to
mouse-movement and left-clicking.
The 2013 MacBook Air laptops have a new hardware touchpad device
(05ac:0291) which is not compatible with the 'bcm5974' multitouch
driver. As a result, the generic 'usbhid' is being associated with
the device (evident in /sys/bus/usb/drivers/usbhid/), which has the
effect of the touchpad being registered as a 'Pointer' rather than a
'Touchpad' in X. As a result, it is assigned the generic evdev X
mouse driver rather than the synaptics X driver.
I have been able to 'force' the touchpad to be associated with the
'bcm5974' kernel driver (via sysfs), however, the driver fails to
communicate with the hardware and no mouse functionality is available.
In this case the bcm5974 reports 'could not read from device' in
dmesg.
