[Bug 1176993] Re: Very poor performance of the 2nd UATA harddrive (works well with Mageia2 kernel)
Jaromír Cápík, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .
If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:
apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Title:
Very poor performance of the 2nd UATA harddrive (works well with
Mageia2 kernel)
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Hello.
We're experiencing an issue with performance of the 2nd harddrive (/dev/sdb) when running Ubuntu kernels.
The system has the following 2 UATA harddrives:
/dev/sda:
Model=WDC WD1200JB-75EVA0, FwRev=15.05R15, SerialNo=WD-WMAEL1235051
Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec SpinMotCtl Fixed DTR>5Mbs FmtGapReq }
RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=57600, SectSize=600, ECCbytes=74
BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=8192kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=8
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=234375000
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-1,2,3,4,5,6
/dev/sdb:
Model=ST3160812A, FwRev=3.ADH, SerialNo=5LSCYD99
Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs RotSpdTol>.5% }
RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=4
BuffType=unknown, BuffSize=8192kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=8
CurCHS=16383/16/63, CurSects=16514064, LBA=yes, LBAsects=312500000
IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:240,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
UDMA modes: udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5
AdvancedPM=no WriteCache=enabled
Drive conforms to: Unspecified: ATA/ATAPI-1,2,3,4,5,6,7
The speed measurement with hdparm -Tt results in these values:
/dev/sda:
Timing cached reads: 932 MB in 2.00 seconds = 465.53 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 168 MB in 3.01 seconds = 55.73 MB/sec
/dev/sdb:
Timing cached reads: 638 MB in 2.00 seconds = 318.51 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 12 MB in 3.56 seconds = 3.37 MB/sec
I've tested the same with kernel taken from Mageia 2.
The second drive returned over 400MB/sec for the cached reads
and 75MB/s for buffered disk reads.
I tested the following two Ubuntu kernels and the issue is reproducible with both of them:
3.5.0-17-generic
3.5.0-28-generic
lspci -nn says:
00:0f.1 IDE interface [0101]: Broadcom CSB6 RAID/IDE Controller [1166:0213] (rev a0)
/dev/sda is sharing the primary UATA cable with DVD burner.
/dev/sdb is single on the secondary UATA cable.
I'm willing to provide you with any additional debug info.
Please, let me know.
Thanks and regards,
Jaromir.
