[Bug 586471] Re: Mouse & keyboard freeze at logon screen

Anthony Bodle, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development
release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (not the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.13-rc4

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

Title:
Mouse & keyboard freeze at logon screen

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
New bug raised at the request of Jeremy Foshee, to provide separate
  information about 577671.

Downloaded 10.04 to CD. Will not run as live CD, as keyboard and
mouse nearly always freeze as soon as logon screen is displayed,
whereas old CD for 8.04 LTS works normally.

Occasionally keyboard input is possible at logon, but it promptly acts as if a key is stuck down, for instance typing the alphabet in the password box would go
  abccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
at which point keyboard and mouse freeze.

Even more rarely it is possible to logon, but the "stuck key" and then
freeze happens as soon as the keyboard is used. All failures happen so
soon that it is not possible to do any useful work. Slowing keyboard
repeat delay and rate to minimum does not help.

Managed to install, dual boot with WinXP, by using noapic parameter at
boot time. However first boot resulted in a freeze as I had not added
noapic. Tried again with noapic, fine, and proceeded to download
  updates etc, system runs stable.

Booting in recovery mode and selecting low graphics option also
  results in stable system.

Mobo is Asus P4S800 with 2.4GHz processor, 512Mb memory, Nvidia
Geforce 256 AGP 4X graphics (rather old), Liteon GC/N150AT/ATA lcd
  panel display.

Tried changing PS2 mouse and keyboard for USB but made no difference,
nor did a different brand of display.

Have run ubuntu-bug -p linux as requested. Will submit this then
reboot without noapic, to provoke a freeze, as it has been a few days
  since I did that.

After the expected freeze, will reboot without noapic and do an apport
if that turns out to be the right thing to do - apologies for any
incorrect answers in the quiz, but am just a beginner at this.

Tell me if there is anything else you need me to do.
