[Bug 1036102] Re: Card reader not working on Dell Inspiron M301Z
Julien Olivier, thank you for your comments regarding them https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1036102/comments/32 :
>"This bug existed a long time ago, then got fixed, and then came back again. So, that means that this is not a hardware bug or a BIOS bug. If this has been fixed before, this can be fixed again."
This is a flawed argument. Just because your card reader functionality
changed dependent on linux version, doesn't mean it's not dependent on
the BIOS.
Regarding https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1036102/comments/34 :
>"You are technically wrong. 1) As I said in comment #17, at one point, using the same hardware and the same BIOS, it used to work. So, it is *not* necessary to update the BIOS to fix this issue."
See above.
>"2) Updating a BIOS is a potentially risky operation..."
There is always a risk in everything. However, regarding BIOS updates,
this risk is largely non-existent if you plug your laptop into the power
supply, and keep it plugged in for the duration (~1 minute).
>"...as it can brick my *work* laptop."
While it is understood this laptop is a work one, it doesn't change the
dynamic of the situation. If your computer is not yours, but provided by
your employer, your company's IT department would do it for you.
Regarding
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1036102/comments/36
:
>"I am trying to help Ubuntu by reporting bugs on my free time."
I also help Ubuntu on my free time.
"This is benevolent help, and that is supposed to be welcome."
It is quite welcomed by the entire Ubuntu Community. However, nobody is
going to be pleased to have an undue burden placed on developer
resources when one insists on their problem being worked on, without
updating the BIOS, as noted above.
>"You, on the other side, are dismissing that work using a destructive
attitude."
Please do throw unfounded accusations around, as it's rude. Given I've
previously provided you all the documentation on how to update your
BIOS, and why this is requested, from both kernel developers and the
Ubuntu Community, your resistance to updating would be the destructive
component of this discussion.
As well, please stop creating unnecessary duplicate reports, and then
unmarking them. The discussion can continue on your master report here,
so that it may be easily followed.
Thank you for your understanding.
