Got the external mouse working, but then found I'd somehow been booting
14.04 on a 3.8.8 kernel. Time to redo the installation...

  Synaptics Touchpad not detected in Asus 1225B

Bug description:
  I have just upgraded my machine from Ubuntu 13.04 to 14.04 and have
  found that the touchpad no longer works. I'm currently on kernel
  version 3.8.0.35. The device does not appear in
  /proc/bus/input/devices or xinput list.

  According to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingTouchpadDetection I
  should report this bug here.
