I believe the bug was fixed with a recent update. 
After doing the latest updates and rebooting, I can see the "r" now in the dash.
I noticed this about a week ago, and I have rebooted many times after updates since then, but I didn't reboot my pc for these last couple days, which takes me to the conclusion of a recent fix.

I am changing the status to "fix released" but feel free to change it
anything else more appropriate

  Invisible "r" in dash

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Whenever I type a lowercase "r" in dash, it doesn't visually appear, not affecting the result of the search.
  I doesn't happen with any other letter but a lowercase r, I've tested it with different graphic drivers without a change on the outcome.

  There is a video on youtube with a person showing the same issue, but
  I couldn't find it reported here.
