[Bug 1324762] Re: MBP 8, 1 fails to boot without noefi since linux-image-3.13.0-20-generic

Mike Gratton, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (3.15-rc7) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

** Description changed:

- My MacBookPro 8,1 (Early 2011, 13") will not boot using any trusty
- kernel linux-image-3.13.0-20-generic or later, unless the noefi kernel
- param is set.
-
- When booting linux-image-3.13.0-20-generic or later without the noefi
- param, I get a grey rectangle displayed, centred, filling most of the
- screen, and the system hangs. If booting into rescue mode without noefi
- (i.e. without quiet, splash, vt.redirect, etc.), I see the following
- (roughly, from memory...)
-
+ My MacBookPro 8,1 (Early 2011, 13") will not boot using any trusty kernel linux-image-3.13.0-20-generic or later. I get a grey rectangle displayed, centred, filling most of the screen, and the system hangs. When booting into rescue mode without kernel parameters quiet, splash, vt.redirect, etc., I would see something like:
  > Loading vmlinuz-3.13.0-27-generic...
  > Loading initrd.img-3.13.0-27-generic...

- Then the system hangs. In either case, on reboot I'm dropped
- automatically into the GRUB menu.

- To boot in EFI mode, I keep linux-image-3.13.0-19-generic around - which

- gfx and disk performance suffers, and features such as the monitor
- brightness keys fail to work altogether.
+ WORKAROUND: Booting using kernel boot parameter noefi, however gfx and

+ keys fail to work altogether.
