My suspicions were wrong, I installed and tested the WICD and the same symptoms occurred, with the difference that the WICD automatically reconnected without asking me the password for the wireless network. 
I'll try to make some more tests, maybe compile the driver downloaded directly from Broadcom and see what happens ...
