Title:
Computer freezes shortly (GUI) and sometimes freezes completely

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
I am using Ubuntu 12.04 x86_64 on a Dell Latitude E6520 with Intel
Sandy Bridge CPU/GPU (no additional GPU).

The issue was not present on 11.10 and it started appearing only a few days ago on 12.04.
So, until a few days ago, Ubuntu 12.04 was fine as well.

The computer freezes (Unity GUI) for a few seconds, no reaction to any
keyboard input, the cursor still moves, but no reaction on any mouse
buttons. Most of the time, the system recovers and continues to work
as before, sometimes it did freeze completely and required a "hard
reboot" (power off and on again).

If the system recovers, the following dmesg entries can be observed:
  [..]
[ 4351.356564] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
[ 4351.356573] [drm] capturing error event; look for more information in /debug/dri/0/i915_error_state
  [ 4351.365648] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[ 4357.514587] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
  [ 4357.514815] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[ 4647.526356] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
  [ 4647.526600] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
[ 4673.674039] [drm:i915_hangcheck_hung] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung
  [ 4673.674289] [drm] Enabling RC6 states: RC6 on, RC6p off, RC6pp off
  [..]

Also, in case the system recovers, apport (GUI) pops up multiple
times, but never opens a browser window to actually file the bug.
  Using apport-cli did work.

  Regards, Linus
