sudo apt-get install -f

The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
kde-li0n-engb
use apt-get autoremove to remove it.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 4 not to upgrade.
did that.
did the other things you suggested.
everything seems to be working now
thanks,
Frank
