In the description, you say the 3.13.0-35 kernel also exhibits the bug.
Is there a prior Trusty kernel version that does not exhibit the bug?
If so, we can perform a kernel bisect to identify the commit that
introduced this.

Title:
  Desktop not loading after password entry

Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  After automatic update Sept 22, my ubuntu will not go past password-
  entry screen. After I enter password it goes back to login-screen.

  Tried the former kernel also: 3.13.0-35, but same problem. Recovery
  mode through GRUB also does not work (all kernels, two)

  apt-get update && apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade did not help
  either
