[Bug 1383780] Re: Resume from suspend fails
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v3.18 kernel[0].
If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.
If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.
If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".
Thanks in advance.

Title:
Resume from suspend fails
Status in “linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
I'm running ubuntu on a Dell studio laptop with Intel® 965GM x86/MMX/SSE2 graphics. Most things work great, but every time I try to resume from suspend the machine hangs. The screen simply stays black. I have to hold the power button to hard reset. The reboot then works ok.
I seem to remember that the resume used to work under 12.04 but since I upgraded to more recent versions it stopped working. I most recently upgraded to 14.10 hoping the problem would go away with more recent versions, but no luck. I've searched around a lot, found a post that suggested that looking at file /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old might give useful information.
That file does indeed state a few things that seem relevant to me, such as:
...
[ 33.637] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libfbdevhw.so
[ 33.638] (II) Module fbdevhw: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
[ 33.638] compiled for 1.16.0, module version = 0.0.2
[ 33.638] ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 18.0
[ 33.638] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa
[ 35.971] (EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version: Permission denied [13].
[ 35.971] (EE) intel(0): Failed to claim DRM device.
[ 35.971] (II) UnloadModule: "intel"
[ 35.971] (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
[ 35.971] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 35.971] (EE) no screens found(EE)
[ 35.971] (EE)
Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
at http://wiki.x.org
for help.
[ 35.971] (EE) Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information.
[ 35.971] (EE)
[ 36.014] (EE) Server terminated with error (1). Closing log file.
I guess if "drm failed" and as a result "no screen has a usable configuration" then that would explan why the screen simply stays black on resume, but I have no idea how to debug this further or how to fix it.
Any help / advice much appreciated.
