Andreas Schneider, thank you for your comment. While ecryptfs has both a
kernel and user-space component, the userspace didn't change going from
Trusty to Utopic as per https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ecryptfs-
utils . Hence, this would indicate another actor at work.
ersin, could you also please test a prior kernel version to see if it
still reproduces the problem?

requires a reboot, which I can log in with recovery mode through the
cmd line prompt.
