Thanks - some time ago the bug disappeared - monitor settings were also 
changed, suggesting that a particular video configuration was induced 
which my monitor would not cope with, unless settings were changed, 
possibly to some 'auto' configuration.

  running cheese causes screen to go blank

Bug description:
  alt-f4 closes "cheese" & restores screen

  sorry, because screen is blank, difficult to gain further info like
  package name etc

  Ubuntu 14.04 (current is rc7)
  Dell Inspiron 545
