[Bug 1397694] Re: System lockups with utopic kernel
Max Bowsher, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/precision-t1700-workstation/drivers an update to your BIOS is available (A10). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.
Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't
have to create a new bug report.
Once the BIOS is updated, then please mark this report Status Confirmed.
Thank you for your understanding.

Title:
System lockups with utopic kernel
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Since upgrading to utopic, I've been experiencing occasional system
lockups - when this occurs, nothing at all is responsive including the
mouse pointer and Alt-SysRq combinations.
Lockups only occur infrequently - perhaps once every day or two days -
so testing this is going to be slow and problematic.
So far, rolling back to the trusty kernel seems to have fixed it, so
it seems unlikely to be a hardware problem.
I'm going to reboot into http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v3.17.4-vivid/ now and run with that for a few days.
