Nostradamnit, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Karmic reached EOL on April 30, 2011.
See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases
Is this reproducible in the latest release of Ubuntu via

Title:
Display won't wake up
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: couchdb
System: Ubuntu 9.10 clean install
Video chipset info:
product: 82915G/GV/910GL Integrated Graphics Controller
vendor: Intel Corporation
Expected results:
Display turns back on via mouse or keyboard input after being turned off by the power management functionality.
Observed results:
After the system turns the monitor off after 30 minutes of inactivity, sometimes it won't come back on, neither by mouse nor keyboard input.
The power management values are pretty much the default; I checked the spin down drives option.
The screensaver is Feedback.
I have to physically power down and then back up to recover.
Please let me know if I can provide further assistance.
Sam
