Julian Lam, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Lucid Desktop reached EOL on May 9, 2013.

Is this reproducible in the latest release of Ubuntu via

If so, please execute the following via a terminal in order for the necessary debugging information to be attached:

  What I did: Unplugged the AC adapter from the laptop.

  Expected behaviour: The laptop should dim the screen brightness to
  save power.

  What happens: The laptop suspends. Twice.
