[Bug 1362584] Re: [HP 255 G1 Notebook PC] Synaptics Touchpad not Working after upgrade from 12.04.1 LTS to 14.04.1 LTS

Christopher M. Penalver (penalvch), I have installed the latest upstream kernel (3.18.0-031800rc7). There were several errors during the removal of the previous upstream kernel and several errors during the installation of this one similar to those experienced when installing the R17 upstream kernel. The system did boot however but on every reboot of this latest kernel there are 5 or 6 system problems detected.
I have retained the terminal output from both the uninstall and the install.
The touchpad still refuses to work on the latest upstream kernel.

As the touchpad works ok when the system is booted from the 14.04.1 live
dvd, presumably this is the same kernel as that upgraded to from
12.04.1, i.e. the one the system is booting from? It makes me think
that there was an issue with the upgrade procedure and that maybe the
issue is with the device driver or configuration file.
