Merlijn Sebrechts, as per http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers an update to your BIOS is available (1.30). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?  If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't

Title:
  Screen brightness not working acer aspire 5742

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  My laptop does not respond to the screen brightness control after default Ubuntu install. The following workaround worked: http://askubuntu.com/a/450594
  It adds a config file to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/

  adding acpi_backlight=vendor to boot params did nothing
  adding acpi_osi=Linux to boot params only fixed the keyboard shortcuts, but the screen indicator and the brightness settings dialog stopped working.

  Please let me know if this is not the right package, or if you need
  more info.
