  grep N_GSM /boot/config-*
  /boot/config-3.16.0-28-generic:# CONFIG_N_GSM is not set

  seems it is not set in the ubuntu config (it is also marked
  experimental, i don't think the default kernels enable experimental
  modules if they are not at least in the staging area already.

  i fear you have to build a custom kernel package for this [1]
  and you should file a bug [2] to get it enabled by default if possible.
