>From the image we can see that the maas installer is using overlayroot
to allow customisation of the image.  It is not handling the new
workdir= parameter which prevents successful mounting of root, and
aborts the boot.

Bug description:
  There appears to be an issue with the use of overlayfs in the image.
  See the attached screenshot for details. Immediately after that
  overlayfs error the kernel panics.
