I think that would be a great basis to build upon.

By the way, I also wonder why KiCad doesn't have more qualified
contributors. It may just be that there aren't that many people
who are interested in hardware and that also happen to be great
C++ programmers, or maybe only few of them care enough about
Free software. But maybe those people are around and there's
just something else that keeps them from contributing.

I wonder how gEDA "the competition" is doing in this regard.
