BTW, here are some thoughts on clearance (for electrical reasons,
but much of this should also apply to mechanical clearance):

Only the list at the beginning is relevant to this discussion.
The rest is about chip resistors and such.

In the posting, "clearance" refers to a global clearance.
"Component" refers to the component's package.
