Careful, on Ubuntu Lucid, 2.8.10 seems to work Ok.

$ wx-config --version

2.8.10

/usr/lib/libwx_baseu_xml-2.8.so.0

is part of the package libwxbase2.8.0.   Had it not been, I would have
given more thought to using it.
