I sent a couple of messages through:

  smtp.gmail.com

and they failed to reach this mailing list.  They were not essential, and could be very
delayed.

So I switched back to my other smtp server and things are fine now. 

The failed messages are in the sent folder at gmail, so go figure.

I am now wary of smtp.gmail.com, and I don't particularly like the idea that they keep all
my sent emails for a long period of time.
