For me, it is very handy, as it let me see layers which would be hidden when 
drawn opaque. Like part contours and pads on layer other than i tracing on. 
E. g. If trace is just under silkscreen line, in the method you suggest i will 
not see trace or graphic, but now i see 'em both. I worked with the way you 
suggest in P-cad, and i switched to 'translucent' mode there after while, 
which is like kicad.

I'd beter think of some 'unobvious' way to draw, like asymmetric contours, 
like zone ones, but with semi-transparent or hatch fill.
