Most of the issues come from drawing calls. Nvidia proprietary driver
seems to do some tricks like caching the drawing calls and returning
them as done before actually drawing and that gets nice performance
boosts in badly written applications.

Intel is an exceptional performer on CERN's cairo based implementation.

What's the GPU on your Atom setup?
