Re: OS X Packaging Update

I did some experiments some while back, but i didn’t have much of a success… the facts from what I tried:

I definitely started to have the problem after I updated to Xcode6. All my previous builds with Xcode5 didn’t show the problem on my machines and also my builds didn’t show the problem for Jean-Paul. Those were all stock KiCad builds, all the changes in there are now already in the repository.

With the update to Xcode6 I also updated my dependencies. To rule that out, I also swapped all the dependency libs (except libGLEW, didn’t work because of different version) from an older build (maybe ~5 revisions difference, but nothing relevant) that doesn’t show the problem into a new build that shows the problem and the problem is still there. So, it has nothing to do with wxWidgets & Co. (except maybe libGLEW).

I guess it is some kind of an initialization problem, because it is only there if you do startup in the wrong order (but then, it’s always there). Also, *only* eeschema frame shows the problem, but *not* library editor - which shares much of the code with eeschema.
So, I compared creation of the eeschema and library editor frames and found some small differences. But, none of them seems to have an impact (changed things back and forth but didn’t solve the problem for eeschema).

Another observation is that even when the problem is there eeschema is fully functional. You can place components, draw lines, etc. - the red box is drawn just above all of that (you can see this).

All in all, I think that this problem has been in for some while, but maybe has been brought up due to the new Xcode? I don’t think it is something that has been introduced into KiCad recently… the changes between my working and non-working builds don’t have to do anything with that (I don’t know the code in detail, but from the diffs I am pretty much sure about that… no changes that have to do something with drawing).

It might also be a problem with the wxOverlay stuff and the new Xcode version… this is unique to OSX builds. But again, it must be related to setting up something, otherwise it also wouldn’t work if you start things in the right order…

Bernhard

I do not know if it happen in Windows or Linux platform, but in OS X, it is umbearable when working on a complex layout. I usually do not load the schematic while working on layout, so each time I want to look at the schematic, I have to exit KiCad, and then load the schematic, and after load pcbnew.
