Ha - that is a much later stage.

However, I *now* have footprints on my KiCad (virtual) pcb board.

The key breakthrough is that on the 3 panel Cvpcb window, I have to 
*double-click* on the selected label/footprint/? in the rightmost panel. 
Then the label jumps into the middle panel.

Without that double-click, nothing sticks...
