Re: 3D model generation.

Hi Mario,

thank you for your reply...

I was hoping it would be available for the stable release...
(I think it is a good feature for kicad to export the 3d model for mechanical purposes)
anyway I will wait for the new version of 3d-viewer :)

Hi Maurice,

The 3d-viewer is already internally computing the bounding boxes, but .. (it was discuss here before) it is not easy / elegant for external modules (ex: exporters) to access that information.
I think I already discuss a bit with Cirilo about this idea.

I am working on a new version of 3d-viewer, that may in future solve this, it will work like an (decoupled from 3d-viewer) API that you can request to load a model and read boundingboxes..etc
One day.. it will be possible :)

Subject: Re: [Kicad-developers] 3D model generation.

Hi Mario,

do you think it would be possible to add, for mechanical purposes, the
option to export the plain pcb with bounding boxes of the vrml modules?

that could eliminate the problem related to the conversion of vrml
models to STEP/IGES and could simplify a lot the mechanical model,
maintaining the information for building a mechanical 3D layout ...

the bounding box version of 3D modules plus the plain pcb should be
enough for mechanical purposes interchanges...

thank you
Maurice
