I found a regression in GAL caused by my last change so I reverted it
(advanced-feature-bugfixes r5932). This needs more thought.

In the meantime, though, the other bug fixes in the branch (related to
mouse grabs on the text tool) have been pretty well tested and should
be good to merge any time you want.
