Re: About collaboration, simulation, documentation, organisation, usability and documentation
Hi Martin,
It is good to bring some discussion where to the mailing list. Some of this points discussed here (as Wayne pointed?) was already discussed before, we may need some way of track / record of this discussions, it would help to add / improve the discussions.
"On the other hand, it's funny that in the repository are 3 (!) actively
developed refactorings of the 3D Viewer. I understant that 3D modelling is
interesting and that you cannot prohibit to the developers to play with it,
but this is waste of effort."
I am one of the guys (actually 2 as already explained) that is wasting his time.
Actually, it was one of my proposes, waste my time but keep my mind happy, fulfilled!
I am (was) a demoscener [1] so I was used to do things without any propose or usefulness, just for fun to do it.
(I am not being sarcastic!)
That work in my branch is still not part of Kicad (I wish it could be.. one day), it is just a personal development. Nobody asked me to do it, I didnt discuss it with (almost) nobody (sadly, I wish i could discuss more). So it is a very selfish work (I would be very happy if somebody could join me, but still didnt find anyone with the same interests).
At moment it is something for self entertainment, but I hope one day if I work hard and negotiate with the "product owners" that is could become part of Kicad and be something helpful for other people.
I am only doing that very specific because is the only interest I have, it will be very difficult that I will work on something else on kicad that I have no personal interests. I will only do it if I need it or if that will make me happy.
I believe kicad is a very lucky successful project. This is an electronic tool, people I know that work in (or are very good at) electronic design area hate software development! They are almost opposite areas of interest, so it looks like a miracle that "so many" good software developers (that are also probably electronic designers) are contributing to this for free and kicad survive for so many years!
The fact that thing of "people do what they want and they like" help improve kicad in different areas that hopefully still going in the same path and main kicad goals.
Before I join kicad, this was more or less how the 3d-viewer looks like:
http://blog.nielshorn.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/kicad-pic_3d.png
with the work I did in the last years (with other contributions) 3d-viewer now looks more like this:
http://kicad-pcb.org/img/frontpage/kicad_3dviewer.png
I am not take credit to my self with this but what I mean with this example is that 3d-viewer was not in priorities of kicad, so only people with personal interests will be able to improve this little parts. The other main developers (eg CERN?) are working on planned and priority things (I hope!)
And so on...
Cheers,
Mario Luzeiro
