That sounds great!
Sometimes  a full-screen (optional: 45° diagonal) cross-hair mouse
cursor together with a dot grid seems quite useful to me.
A radial grid placement-mode was also nice to use for round LED backlights.

Auxiliary drafting lines easy to turn on/off with a hotkey are also on a
wish-list (they don't need to be layers).
