As an example of the types of sub-assemblies which kicad may be
able to display in the future, I have a kicad 3D preview of a moderately
complex electronics stack:

The VRML file was generated via my experimental code on visualizing
IGES/STEP within kicad. I think the only missing part now is the
normals calculations then I can rework the code into a 3D Plugin.
