The 3d_initial_merge branch has been synced to r6620. Thanks to
nickoe, Adam, and Bernhard the branch now builds on Linux, MSWin,
and OSX and there are nightly builds available for MSWin and OSX.

There don't seem to be any issues  running KiCad when installed with
those packages and I haven't had any further reports of problems
building on any of the 3 supported systems.
