Hi Orson,
With the commits you did yesterday, I tested with debug on linux and it worked! No asserts.
I didn't tested your today's commit yet (but I expect that the assert issue come back now).

I suggest from my side, to not spend more time with my "Mario's problem".

Your latest commit on Windows works for me.

I have just pushed a potential fix for the problem you describe. Would
you verify it?

I have also retracted changes introduced in 6912, as seemingly they
introduce more problems than solve. I hope it solves the problems
recently seen on OSX.
