With the current icons I get confused, often opening the footprint editor when expecting pcbnew, etc. I've come to accept that an open book or diary implies somehow the "Library Editor" which doesn't immediately register in my mind is for editing schematic symbols.
The screenshot you attached was much clearer to me -- however -- I wonder if "human footprint" makes the same connection as "component footprint" in the variety of human languages that kicad serves.
I guess I'm not really saying anything conclusive, except that your attachment basically helped to put in to words what I felt about the current icons.
Also, a slight spacing between the groups of icons would be helpful, I would think. Right now all icons have the same spacing between them, however if there were space between library editor and pcbnew, and space between footprint editor and the "extra tools" then I think it would be even clearer.

Dear All,few years have passed since the last main Kicad icon restyling. In my opinion, the current icons are serving us quite well except for very few which could use a little face lift. The few icons that make me particularly itchy are the main Kicad icons for which this very imposing pencil does not play very well. I know that some of your really want a pencil to suggest that those tools are for editing. The truth is that now a days icons can be a little more subtle.I'd like to propose these new set of icons for the main KiCad toolbar. Please let me know what you think and please if there is anybody who wants to help out please, now is the moment.Cheers Fabrizio _______________________________________________ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~kicad-developers Post to : kicad-developers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~kicad-developers More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
