The documentation build system really needs to have an automated way to
pull bitmaps for icons directly from the source repository...


It doesn't really need to. The screenshots also need to be updated at the
same time and that is not trivial to automate. I think it is easier to
manually check when you manually update the icons.

There is nothing won by automation here.
