The -patch installers are built without the library, and have been tested
to install fine on top of stable or nightly, leaving the library alone.

I can see that nightly users mostly want to stay somewhat up to date (there
is usually a forum thread in which users discuss which nightly is the best)
with the software, and install a new version of the library either as a
side effect of a nightly, or because the new version has something they
need.

In the long run, it might make sense to decouple the library from the main
program and have it release independently. This will make it more difficult
to build a single package that contains everything, but my feeling is that
this is closer to what users need.
