postgresql8.4 migration retrospective (planning for 9)

 

Hey Stuart, Gary, I'm wondering if you could put a few hours aside
this week or next and have a think about how we can avoid the things
that went wrong with the 8.4 migration.

Specifically, I'm aware of the following things that happened during
the 8.4 migration:
 - very long drawn out process for having the right packages
 - no rollback mechanism
 - we had a number of performance surprises (OOPS rate tripled)

I'd love it if we had some story around these ('we don't care is ok,
if that makes sense :)') for use when we tackle pg9.
