Message #06827
Raising the UI bar
Hello Launchpadders,
We want Launchpad to have an awesome interface. To get there we need to
improve our overall level of polish. There are plans to work on
redesigning layouts and lots of other fun things, but there is something
we can do now: fix bugs.
Recently I've started tagging bugs with 'ui-easy'. The "easy" part is a
bit of a misnomer. Basically they are bugs that follow the following:
- only take a couple of hours to fix,
- they don't require much (or any) discussion, and
- minimal coding work.
You can see the list here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/launchpad/+bugs?field.tag=ui-easy
At this point I've only been through the High and Medium bugs and there
are already 50 bugs on that list.
There are a couple of things you can do to help. One is to tag bugs like
these. If you're not entirely sure if a bug fits this category then tag
it anyway and the person who picks it up will quickly discover if it
really is straightforward or not.
The other thing you can do is help me fix these bugs. One thing to
remember is that sometimes with UI bugs the solution is not always what
has been proposed by the bug reporter.
Just as we have goals like page requests to be sub one second and zero
OOPSes, one of my goals for the UI is zero WTF moments (unfortunately
there are no easy metrics for knowing when we've achieved this). There
are a lot of these in Launchpad at the moment, and fixing these bugs
will be a big step in the right direction.
As always if you have questions about UI stuff, please do not hesitate
to ask me or organise a call.
Cheers,
Huw
