The change seems sane but I'm wary of having trunk diverge too much from 1.2. We would found ourselves in a situation where we wouldl have to deal with more conflicts than necessary when backporting changes from trunk to 1.2.  Do you intend to backport that branch to 1.2 (and limit the divergence)?
