Hello Daniel, Welcome to Ubuntu! You may be better subscribing to the ubuntu-users https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users as this list is for Launchpad I'm moving this discussion to the ubuntu list as well (remove lp-users list from future correspondence) > My computer is a dell and the operating system is a windows xp I hope i can get help I have a copy of the cd from my teacher and cant seem to have it do anything when I put the cd in. Ubuntu is a whole operating system, like XP. You could do the following with Ubuntu: 1) replace your XP operating system with Ubuntu entirely (and replacing ALL your current data and programs) 2) install both Ubuntu and XP on the same system and only use one at a time (called dual booting, keeping your current data and programs) 3) Try running Ubuntu "inside" windows (using a program called "wubi", which is included on the CD, Ubuntu can be removed like a normal windows program) 4) Running Ubuntu without installing anything on your hard disk (this is called a "live CD") I would suggest only trying 3 or 4 since you are new to linux. I'd also see what your teacher suggests and use the forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/) and online chat (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InternetRelayChat). Since you are new, it's nice to have someone available to help if you have a question (imagine trying to learn a PC with windows if you've never seen one before!) Ubuntu is designed to be easy for new users to learn, but it's always good to know where to look if you have a question. Here's how to do choices 3 and 4 from above 3) http://wubi-installer.org/faq.php 4) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD If you're stuck, try google-ing your question (chances are your question has already asked and answered by someone already) and please take advantage of the forums and chat (especially the beginner forums and chat, there are plenty of helpful people out there!) Also, check out the beginner's team (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BeginnersTeam) they are dedicated to helping people in your situation. Regards, Scott
