Could you put your source package on a web server somewhere so that we
can look at it?  Chances are it's because you're (probably
unintentionally) relying on some feature of dpkg-source that didn't
exist in Ubuntu 16.04, which the relevant Launchpad machine is currently
running.  If we can look at the source package then we can advise in
more detail.
