Gravatar has changed their behaviour when dealing with "default" URLs in the
query string which of course affects us since we redirect to them:

I'm hoping others will jump in because I haven't been able to think of a
good solution here (assuming there is one).

(This will of course mean that we need to update the draft spec...)

The second thing is that I haven't been able to figure out how to
work-around this bug properly:

It seems that Gravatar will happily fetch most HTTPS images, but it barfs
on ours with a 504. No idea why, they don't provide any useful messages. If
you have any ideas on what might be wrong and/or found a pattern for working
ones, please jump in!
