Simon Steinbeiß proposed the following answer:
In the upcoming Xubuntu release, the name of the currently selected user
is bigger, as is the arrow of the combobox. I hope this will help users
see the important bit of the greeter immediately.

I hope your mother will get used to this or understand the combobox
after you've shown/explained it to her. I'm not sure what else we can do
about this...
