The answer to the question is most likely that there is no proper theme set in lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf (which usually resides in /etc/lightdm/).
The warning about the environment variable is most likely entirely unrelated.


@Samuel Suther: are you really using lightdm-gtk-greeter with Kubuntu??
